Spirit was the FM rock radio, darlings of the ‘underground’ relatively unknown to the wider world. They were maybe just ahead of their time, Jay Ferguson (vocals), Randy California (guitar), John Locke (keyboards), Mark Andes (bass) and Ed ‘Cass’ Cassidy (drums)
‘Clear’ is very much an album of two halves. The first consists of numbers that, with their time changes, mellow keyboards and psychedelic lead guitar, would have been meat and drink to fans of the band’s first two long-players.
Randy California spent four formative teenage months in 1966 playing alongside Hendrix at the Café Wha in New York. Indeed it was Jimi, still very much alive at the time of this recording, who gave the former Randy Wolfe his name, there being two Randys in his band from different US coasts.
John Locke’s jazzy electric piano-playing on this album hints at Steely Dan who ‘crossed over’ with a similar sound a few short years later.
It’s now four decades since Spirit successfully auditioned for Lou Adler in a Sunset Strip club, and their music – never subject to fad or fashion – still sounds as good as ever. This backs up a quote by Jim Washburn of the LA Times who recently claimed that ‘The Doors were all right – but for many rock fans in the late 1960s, the band that really mattered was Spirit.’
