The 2-DVD set “Donovan – Sunshine Superman – The Journey of Donovan” is about to be released by SPV GmbH. The deluxe boxset will be available up from sept. 26th GER (sept. 29th EUR, oct. 07th USA).

The legendary folk-rock-pop troubadour Donovan Leitch began his career as an itinerant folk musician, creating acoustic hits in 1965 with the gentle Catch The Wind and Colours and his version of Buffy Sainte Marie’s protest anthem Universal Soldier before transforming the pop music landscape with a series of enigmatic and wondrous pop masterpieces that continue to be played on radio and television.

From 1966 through 1969, Dr. Donovan Leitch scored a string of eleven Top 40 hits in a row, including Mellow Yellow, Sunshine Superman, Epistle To Dippy, There Is A Mountain, Wear Your Love Like Heaven, Hurdy Gurdy Man, Jennifer Juniper, Lalena, Atlantis, and Riki Tiki Tavi

Donovan was one of the few artists to collaborate on songs with the Beatles, contributing lyrics to the song Yellow Submarine. Dr. Donovan Leitch was also invited by the Beatles to join them at Abbey Road Studios for the final orchestral overdub session for the Lennon-McCartney collaboration A Day in the Life, the grand finale of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Dr. Donovan Leitch influenced John Lennon and Paul McCartney in their guitar styles during the famous trip to India in 1968 where Dr. Donovan Leitch and the Beatles first learned Transcendental Meditation and bought it back to the West in a huge way. During his career Donovan has played with folk music greats Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, and Bob Dylan, as well as rock musicians Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin and Jeff Beck.

In the past five years Donovan has completed the successful album Beat Café and the book, The Autobiography of Donovan: The Hurdy Gurdy Man (Arrow Books). Donovan also fulfilled his 40-year interest in Transcendental Meditation by heading up the musical wing of the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace.

And now this year Donovan celebrates his 40th anniversary of his trip to India with the Beatles where they studied transcendental mediation and brought it back to the West.

Donovan returns to the stage for a slow world tour starting 2009.
The deluxe double-DVD set contains classic 60´s film and TV appearances, rare archive footage and never-before-seen material as well as 5 previously unreleased songs and all of the hits.

With appearances by Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Mickie Most, Rick Rubin, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Franco Zeffirelli, David Lynch and many more. 40 page booklet incl. informative liner notes and exclusive photo material.

“Donovan is as important and influential as either Dylan or the Beatles … Listen: the man is a poet.” JOHN LENNON

“When I first started to write descent songs in the late ‘60s I badly needed encouragement. Who was there for me? Donovan.” GRAHAM NASH – CSNY

“My first memory of Donovan is an image of him standing in the doorway of a crowded hotel room fi lled with the cast of characters from that now infamous Dylan tour of England in ’65.” JOAN BAEZ

“Donovan was one of my inspirations when I first sat down with my guitar to write songs.” JOHN MELLENCAMP

“Because, let’s face it, hip is hip, cool is cool, and Donovan is supremely groovy.” RICKIE LEE JONES

“Donovan’s music is like multi-circular joy, and it’s like that cat at the party who brings the stash of the best of whatever you want.” DEVENDRA BANHART

“Donovan is a top man in my book and somebody I wish I would run into in a park on a warm Sunday.” BILLY CORGAN – SMASHING PUMPKINS

“Donovan changed my life by writing “Season of the Witch”. It seems I have to perform that song for the rest of my life.” AL KOOPER

“I really enjoyed the sessions I did with Donovan. He’s a very romantic writer and he’s got a lovely sense of humour when he’s writing too.” JIMMY PAGE

“Pop music in the ‘60s played a far more significant role in the lives of young people than it does today. And Donovan was a vital part of the ‘60s pop universe - you would find his music in every record collection, alongside albums by The Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Animals, Doors, Dylan and the like. Growing up in the ‘60s, I was one of millions of young people who learned to play the guitar to “Catch The Wind”, and Donovan’s albums were a regular feature on my record player over the years. We met through mutual friends at the tail end of the ‘90s, and quickly began to develop the idea of doing an extensive fi lmed portrait. Over the last fi ve years I have travelled to the four corners of the earth with Donovan, filming him in all the locations that have the greatest significance in this extraordinary singer-songwriter’s life and work. I’d like to thank Donovan for his trust and for his willingness to get involved with this portrait. What has emerged is richly illustrated time travel through four decades of musical magic, brimming with rekindled memories for everyone who lived through those times and packed with pictures for all those interested in the context and background stories of that era. Above all though, this film is a much-deserved and long-overdue appreciation of the artist and his work.
Donovan is the hurdy gurdy man, the universal soldier, the writer in the sun and - most of all - the sunshine superman.” HANNES ROSSACHER (Director)
