THE “SPIRIT” OF ROCKPALAST
It was the middle of the night over here in Germany, while the sun was still shining in Los Angeles, but the back room of the world-famous Whisky A Go-Go, where the phone was ringing, was also shrouded in darkness. That’s the club on Sunset Strip where all the great acts had played: the DOORS, JANIS JOPLIN, LED ZEPPELIN, every rock artist of distinction. We frequently found ourselves talking on the telephone at night, this time in need of a replacement for the impending Rockpalast night at the Grugahalle in Essen. The KINKS had cancelled their appearance due to – as it emerged – an internal band crisis. That’s when Rockpalast director Christian Wagner remembered his penchant for SPIRIT’s music – the album “The Family that Plays Together” featuring the hit “I Got a Line On You” and their – possibly best – LP “The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus” with the anthem “Nature’s Way”. And, of course, RANDY CALIFORNIA’s solo production, “The Adventures Of Kaptain Kopter And Commander Cassidy in Potato Land”. That nocturnal telephone conversation proved successful. We enlisted SPIRIT for a Rockpalast Eurovision broadcast in March 1978, and they were so much more than merely “a stand-in”! The band’s concert turned out to be one of the highlights of the first Rockpalast series (1977 to 1986). At the tender age of fifteen, RANDY CALIFORNIA had played with JIMI HENDRIX and his band of that time, Jimi James and the Blue Flames. Hendrix even wanted to take him to Europe, but Randy’s mother decided that her son was too young and moved back to California with him. That his guitar style was strongly influenced by JIMI became apparent during the Rockpalast concert when he performed HENDRIX’ versions of the DYLAN numbers “Like A Rolling Stone” and “All Along The Watchtower”, adding an imposing bass foundation with his Moog synthesizer, which he operated like the foot pedal of an organ. RANDY and his stepfather, drummer ED CASSIDY, had been the hard core of the numerous SPIRIT line-ups since 1968. CASSIDY’s drum set-up was impressive and included – like a classical orchestra – two timpani. His drum solos were considered highlights of the concert. Larry “Fuzzy” Knight completed the three-piece whose sophisticated arrangements consisting of rock, jazz, blues and psychedelic elements still had all the power of a “simple” classic rock trio. A special highlight came towards the end of the show when DICKEY BETTS, who had appeared on stage with his band GREAT SOUTHERN before SPIRIT, brought out his wall of amps again to jam with SPIRIT. One review even claimed that this jam had been the best performance broadcast by German television by that time. His melodious southern rock guitar presented a striking contrast with RANDY CALIFORNIA’s tougher guitar style. Back then, it was still possible on ARD TV to broadcast the Rockpalast night “open end”, i.e. the show wasn’t over before the last note had been played. The full concert by DICKEY BETTS AND GREAT SOUTHERN will be available on another DVD.
This DVD is an “in memoriam” release: on 2 January 1997, Randy California only just succeeded in rescuing his son Quinn from a dangerous current during a beach holiday in Hawaii. California himself drifted out to the open sea and was never seen again. He died at the age of 46.
